Gernise is a seamstress at our Port-Au-Prince location. She has been working with us since November of 2010. She is very sweetly soft-spoken and brings a peaceful presence to the workshop. Gernise was born and grew up in Croix-des-Bouquets, a northern suburb of Port-au-Prince. She graduated high school and went on to study nursing at a university in the city. When the earthquake of 2010 hit, Gernise was attending class. With the force of the trembling the walls of her school collapsed on her, and she was stuck under the rubble throughout the night calling for help. By the grace of God, Gernise was found alive and rescued the next day. Although she survived, her leg was severely injured and amputated. For those with a disability, finding employment in Haiti can prove next to impossible. She is very thankful for the community she has here, and feels as if the other ladies are her sisters. She says working with other people who can relate to her makes her very happy.
